In this asynchronous course held on Wet Ink, we will look at different online writing forms and explore best practices for writing compelling and important work.
Each week, we will discuss a different form, such as the review, the "listicle," the op-ed, the open letter, the interview, and more. We will talk about how to structure pieces so they grab and hold readers' attention, what attributes can help pieces go viral, and how to generate ideas for maximum flow and productivity. Students will read examples of published work, write new material, and receive feedback each week.
This is a work-heavy course, designed to get writers comfortable with producing content quickly. Participants will respond to a new prompt each week while also giving and receiving constructive feedback.

What you will learn
Students will learn the differences between various forms of online writing. They will learn what make these forms compelling and how to structure their pieces visually to make for easier online consumption. They will also learn techniques that increase engagement with pieces and why some pieces are more likely to go viral than others. Additionally, students will gain a clearer understanding of their own publishing goals and how to achieve them.
Workshop takeaways
By the end of the term, students will have a list of specific goals, a list of places to consider pitching work, and up to 8 articles that could be suitable for publication. They will also have a greater understanding of how Substack works and how to launch and successfully maintain their own.

This workshop is ideal for anyone who wants to build their online presence, start their own Substack, and/or wants to learn about writing their most persuasive and powerful online writing.
Please note: this is an asynchronous course held on Wet Ink. There will be no live meeting dates apart from one optional introductory session on October 17.
About the Instructor
Becky Tuch is a fiction and nonfiction writer based in PA. Her writing has appeared in a variety of venues including Salon, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, dozens of literary magazines and several anthologies, including Best of the Net. She has received literature fellowships and awards from The MacDowell Colony, The Somerville, MA Arts Council and elsewhere.
