African American Writers to Read Right Now

What better time than during a pandemic and a global crisis to get into the minds of individuals who represent a minority group who are making remarkable changes and strides each day. When it comes to notable leadership, class, and intelligence, Michelle Obama comes to mind. Michelle Obama has written a few books, but her book Courageous is still making lasting impressions. It is definitely impressionable as the United States welcomes their first Vice President that is both a woman and a minority. Released in 2018, Becoming is a memoir about the former First Lady and her journey. Not only are book clubs all over the world intrigued by the memoir; it also was awarded a Grammy. If you want an in-depth look into leadership from the views of an African American woman who held one of the most influential supporting roles in the United States, this memoir is definitely for you.

We cannot mention Michelle Obama without mentioning her husband, former President Barack Obama, who is also an author. He has written many notable books, but his latest release, A Promised Land, is touching hearts all over the world. He presents his political career in this memoir. He gives a warm, heartfelt account of the many milestones, obstacles, trials, and successes he has had as a politician, President, husband, father, and family man. The book has only been available for a few months, but it is clear that the impression is there.

The Obamas are notable leaders and have made lasting impressions, but there are also some other authors who are making their own impressions as leaders and now authors. One of these men is Tony Dungy. Tony Dungy is a former professional football player, head coach, sportscaster, and now an author. He shares the secrets to his professional success and leadership abilities in the book, The Mentor Leader: Secrets to Building People and Teams that Win Consistency. The book is grounded on the principle that effective and successful leadership is the basis of mentoring. Through this text, he breaks down leadership into categories that include biblical references and how to use mentoring as a mechanism for success. This is his second of three publications and all three present different perspectives and entities of being an effective leader.

Spiritually, Devon Franklin has been encouraging people all over the world to trust God and take ownership of their spiritualties and their relationships. He has been writing books for years but is mostly known for his book that he co-authored with his now-wife, Meghan Good entitled, The Wait: A Powerful Practice for Finding the Love of Your Life and the Life You Love. In this book, they not only encourage and challenge readers to wait to have sex until they are married, but they share their journey. The book is inspiring and motivating because they allow the reader to become intimate with them as they give their account of how they strengthened their relationship during their wait. Since this book, the Franklins are the couples people are basing their relationships goals on.

Speaking of relationship goals, Pastor Michael Todd hit the road running when he released his book, Relationship Goals: How to Win at Dating, Marriage, and Sex. Pastor Michael Todd is a young, fun, energetic pastor who took the world by surprise when he went viral. One Youtube share of his sermon on relationship goals turned into millions of shares and subscribers. After relationship goals became so popular and people kept wanting more and more, Pastor Todd did the next logical thing, which was to put it in a book. Relationship Goals is a humorous and informative guide that is scripturally based but presented in a laid back relatable way. Not only is it a book, but it also has a study guide accompaniment. The study guide provides couples with challenges, prayers, and thought-provoking questions to help them win in every area of their relationships.

All leaders do not have such humble beginnings and have to go through tougher obstacles to find success as leaders. Eric Thomas is no stranger to struggles. He was not always a preacher, Youtube phenomenon, or motivational speaker. In fact, his story and development as a leader began with his turmoils faced in Detroit, Michigan. In his book, The Secrets to Success, he uses his heartwrenching and raw accounts of his life to motivate, inspire, and encourage readers to make the most out of life. He demands them to turn their travesties into triumphs by putting in the required work to get the life they want. He also shares how all of the struggles he has faced have developed him into the man that he is now, both personally and professionally. Since the release of this book, he has also released additional publications on sacrifice, humility, food trucks, character traits, and greatness.

The authors mentioned are making their own lasting impressions in the world of leadership. Great leaders know and understand that there is power in sharing knowledge. Therefore, they have shared their personal accounts and experiences in an effort to inspire other leaders to fulfill their roles as leaders.
