The Truants by Kate Weinberg

“People disappear when they most want to be seen.”

The Truants hooks you immediately in the prologue when the main character Jess tells you about the people she fell in love with during her first year of college. Alec, the South African journalist, Georgie, seductive pill-popper, Nick, the laid back and handsome geologist, and Dr. Lorna Clay, the teacher who everyone is captured by.

Rewinding back into time, we follow Jess as she enters her first year at college. The only reason she chose this particular college was to be taught by Lorna, who she has admired for some time. As we meet and get to know each character Jess encounters, readers will find themselves also falling in love with them. From small hand touches to drug-induced adventures, readers can expect to be spellbound by Jess’s world of love and friendship.

But when betrayal and tragedy condemn the small group, they’re torn apart and Jess finds herself seeking the advice and comfort of Lorna. When the two leave to hide out on a remote Italian island, Jess discovers a truth that changes everything she thought she knew to be true. Like Jess, readers will be obsessed, confused, hurt, but most importantly, will love as if the characters were real.

The Truants is a seductively written debut novel that you won't know you're obsessed with until it's too late. It will keep you questioning everything you’re told until the end and then leave you mystified. Although aimed at fans of the author Agatha Christie, readers do not need to have any prior knowledge of her books or personal life. Conversations between Jess and Lorna reveal all the reader has to know while still managing to entice readers and reveal secrets that are blatantly hidden in plain sight. Readers will get sucked in and lost in the mystery, love, and betrayals of The Truants.
