Get your story ideas out of your head and into an editor’s inbox. From crafting the pitch to finding the perfect publication to send it to, we’ll cover the basics of pitching for writers who want to get their work out there.
This workshop will explore the pitching process, from coming up with ideas to hitting the send button (and following up, of course!). Whether you’re pitching essays, reported pieces, or guides, this workshop will help you take your idea from a topic to a specific, pitchable story. We’ll cover crafting the pitch, best practices for formatting, where to find pitch calls and editor contacts, and more. And we’ll even take some time to write a pitch that you can send off to an editor yourself.
Students will learn
How to turn a topic you’re interested in into a story idea
A breakdown of what makes an effective pitch, from craft to formatting
Best practices for pitching, including when to follow up and how to pitch multiple places
Where to find publications that are accepting pitches and how to know which editor to pitch
Workshop Takeaways
Resources for where to find publications that are accepting pitches
An understanding for what editors are looking for when they receive pitches
A pitch you’ll write based on your own story idea
A sense of confidence in just sending the pitch!
